Canine Parvovirus Disease Outbreak in Eugene/Springfield Areas
Greenhill urges dog owners to take precautions
Recently, veterinarians have reported an alarming increase in the serious puppy disease, Parvo. Owners of puppies and adult dogs should be sure to take precautions before taking their dogs to public places such as dog parks.
Parvovirus is a viral disease that affects puppies more often than adult dogs. It is a devastating disease that attacks the lining of the digestive system and causes dogs to not absorb nutrients or liquids. Infected dogs have symptoms of fever, lethargy, depression and loss of appetite. The disease is also characterized by severe, bloody diarrhea and vomiting. The virus can live in the environment for months.
If a puppy has any of these symptoms, owners should consult with a veterinarian immediately.
Puppies are protected from the parvovirus by receiving a series of vaccinations. It is also recommended that puppies not go to public places, such as dog parks, until they have completed their vaccination series and have had their rabies vaccination. Owners should check with their veterinarian for specific instructions.
All puppies and dogs adopted from Greenhill Humane Society are given initial parvovirus vaccinations before adoption.
