Volunteer Job Descriptions


Cattery Assistant 

Volunteers assist the Cattery staff with the daily duties of maintaining a healthy and happy temporary home. Volunteers load washers and dryers, fold laundry, wash food & water dishes and clean litter pans. They are also needed to brush cat trees, wash windows, scoop litter boxes and watch for problems on the cattery floor.

Minimum requirements: Basic understanding of cats and their body language and behavior; the ability to work around strong odors and cleaning chemicals; a willingness to clean and a desire improve the lives of the cats.
Highly desired: A volunteer willing to make a regular weekly commitment

Training requirements: Hands-On Training
Supervisor: Cattery Staff
Volunteers Needed: 10:00-12:00, 2:00-3:30, other cleaning as needed

Cattery Companions & Greeters

Volunteers spend time in the cattery playing with cats, petting them, grooming the ones who enjoy it, alerting the staff to messes or problems that need attention, helping to answer questions about specific cats, showing potential adopters how to find information about a cat they’re interested in, replacing collars, filling water bowls and scooping litter pans as needed.

Minimum requirements: Comfortable interacting with the public and knowledge of cats in a shelter situation, professional attitude.

Training requirements: Cattery Workshop
Supervisor: Cattery staff
Volunteers Needed: Seven days a week flexible shifts from 11:00-6:00

Kennel Assistant

In order to prevent disease our dogs need to have sanitary kennels. This ensures potential adoptive families will be confident that their future family member has had the best possible care in their stay at Greenhill. Kennel cleaners will assist the Kennel staff with the morning and afternoon cleaning. Duties include, but are not limited to: washing water buckets, food bowls, blankets, kennel walls and floors. Clean runs need to be set up with water and blankets. This job helps Kennel staff give special care to animals who are ill or are recovering from spay/neutering.

Minimum requirements: Must be able to lift 25 pounds, some bending and stooping; ability to work around strong odors and cleaning chemicals.
Highly desired: A volunteer willing to make a regular weekly commitment.

Training requirements: Kennel Workshop
Supervisor: Kennel Staff
Volunteers Needed: 9:00-11:00 seven days a week, 11:00-1:00 weekends, afternoon cleaning as needed

Dog Walkers

Dog Walkers spend quality time with dogs to get them used to interaction with people. They direct the dogs energy to walking, working and playing with them in yards or spending time in quiet rooms, depending on the dog’s needs. This is instrumental in the socialization process. 

Minimum requirements: Able to physically control dogs on a leash; a basic understanding of dogs and their body language and behavior, a willingness to take dogs out for at least 30 minutes, and a love for animals. 

Training requirements: Kennel Workshop and Dog Walker Training
Supervisor: Kennel Staff
Volunteers Needed: Seven days a week, flexible shifts from 11:00-6:00


Small Animal Habitat Specialist

Provide daily cleaning for the small animals. Duties include placing animals in outdoor pens to exercise, cleaning litter boxes, water bottles, cages, visually checking hamster and other rodent supplies, and providing pellets and fresh vegetables for rabbits and guinea pigs.

Minimum requirements: Basic understanding of rabbits and other small animals and their unique needs. Comfort with handling rabbits, hamsters, rats, gerbils, and guinea pigs. Physically able to move cages and lift aquariums.

Training requirements: Small Animal Workshop
Supervisor:  Volunteer Coordinator 
Volunteers Needed: 9:00-11:00 seven days a week 
 

Small Animal Companions

Provide socialization, grooming and exercise for rabbits and other small animals to enhance their chances for adoption.

Minimum requirements: Basic understanding of rabbits and other small animals and their unique needs. Comfort with handling rabbits, hamsters, rats, gerbils, and guinea pigs. Ability to lift and set up exercise pens.

Training requirements: Small Animal Workshop
Supervisor: Volunteer Coordinator
Volunteers Needed: Seven days a week flexible shifts from 11:00-6:00

Clerical Professional

Volunteers provide a great service to the staff by assisting with data entry, filing, organizing and answering telephones. Duties include but are not limited to working with the staff and public, answering phones and special projects as they come up.

Minimum requirements: Communication skills and attention to detail

Training requirements: Special on-the job training
Supervisor: Volunteer Coordinator
Volunteers Needed: Friday thru Tuesday flexible shifts from 11:00-6:00

Special Events

Greenhill has numerous special events to raise awareness and funds for our facility. The most known event is Rover Romp. About thirteen different events are going to occur in 2008 over a period of thirty-five days.

Minimum requirements: Communication skills and an ability to work well with others

Training requirements: Special on-the job training and knowledge of Greenhill
Supervisor: Community Relations & Volunteer Coordinators
Volunteers Needed: As events occur


Lawn and Garden

We need someone who has an affinity for green growing things and knows how to keep them that way. Currently only our dedicated staff work on this when they can fit it in. Any help is welcome! We especially need someone to mow the grass and who could keep the lawn mower in good condition, too.

Minimum requirements: Familiarity with lawn and garden needs, and a willingness to work with what you find here.

Training Requirements: None
Supervisor: Volunteer Coordinator or Operations Director
Volunteers Needed: Weekly flexible shifts from 11:00-6:00


Maintenance/Carpentry

Maintaining the physical operation at Greenhill is daunting and currently we have a maintenance staff person for just 10 hours a week. He would direct and work with anyone willing to donate any time to maintain our buildings.

Minimum requirements: Good with tools, handy, and willing to take direction.

Training: On the job training
Supervisor: Greenhill maintenance supervisor.
Volunteers Needed: Weekly flexible shifts from 11:00-6:00
