Each year animal shelters around the country are burdened by an increase of rabbits after Easter. Some well-meaning parents buy bunnies for their children in celebration of the holiday, but underestimate the amount of care a rabbit actually requires. As a result, many rabbits are surrendered to shelters, dumped outside or neglected after the novelty of owning an 'Easter bunny' wears off.

Greenhill is still adopting out rabbits this weekend, but potential adopters will be cafefully screened before they can bring the new pet home. If your family is serious about getting a rabbit, Greenhill staff suggests purchasing a rabbit care book and a stuffed bunny for an Easter gift instead, and adopting the rabbit only after careful consideration of its needs.
