Volunteer Opportunities

Do you have love to spare?

Animal enthusiasts just like you make up our volunteer force. Over 150 volunteers from Lane and surrounding counties donate their time to Greenhill Humane Society. All of our volunteers share three things:

1) Compassion and responsibility for all animals
2) Consistency and reliability to help us care for our animals
3) Commitment to reducing animal overpopulation

Volunteers are the foundation of our shelter; without them Greenhill could not provide its current high level of service to our community.  All volunteers must attend an orientation session before volunteering.  You must register to attend one of the monthly orientations.  Click here to RSVP, please leave your name, phone number and area of interest.

Volunteer Spotlight

Lisa Barnes

Lisa has been volunteering at Greenhill since April 2008. Prior to attending the volunteer/foster orientation her plan was to volunteer in the cattery and as a dog walker, but when Ashlee mentioned the Small Animal Room desperately needed cleaning volunteers she felt her efforts would be better utilized there instead and she hasn’t looked back since.

Lisa cleans the Small Animal Room one day a week, takes pictures of the small animals available for adoption and posts these to Petpoint. She also fosters bunnies when needed and volunteers as a Medical Assistant and Autoclave Assistant for the Feral Cat Spay/Neuter Clinic. You may have also recently noticed her Small Animal Room Articles in the Wet Nose Wire and Wet Nose E-News as well as her adorable bunny and guinea pig pictures on Greenhill’s new greeting cards.

In the future Lisa hopes to get a Small Animal Room section up and running on Greenhill’s website with helpful information and care guides as a means of promoting the room and educating the community on the various critters found in the small animal room.

Lisa is a member of the House Rabbit Society and Rabbit Advocates in Portland as well as a member of Etherbun and Housebun forums.

Lisa has some good advice for those of you thinking of adopting one of our Rabbits:

~ “Rabbits are intelligent, social creatures that should live indoors where they are provided healthy food, toys for mental stimulation, socialization and the ability to play and exercise”.

~ “Rabbits are easily litter box trained and with some initial bunny proofing, they can be allowed to run free in selected areas of the home. Under the right circumstances they can even live with cats and dogs”.

Lisa firmly believes that “house rabbits should be provided the same rights, standard of care, and chance for a long healthy life as dogs and cats. Two of the best things you can do for your rabbit companion, which are commonly granted to dogs and cats, are to have them living inside rather than in an outside hutch as well as having them spayed or neutered”.

Rabbits are the 3rd most surrendered animals in shelters. If you are thinking about getting a house rabbit companion please don’t *buy* a bunny. ADOPT!
