June 2026

Maryl

Meet Maryl, our Volunteer of the Month for June! Maryl is celebrating her 4-year volunteer anniversary this month and has contributed more than 350 hours of service since she started volunteering in June 2022. She started out as a Cattery Adoption Floor Cleaner and quickly progressed to training for the role of Cattery Tech Assistant, where she has held a recurring shift ever since. Maryl has a long history of supporting both the animals and people of her community, previously volunteering with the Humane Society of San Bernardino County, SARA’s Treasures, CASA of Lane County, and CASA of Solano County.

After growing up in Southern California and living there for nearly half of her life, Maryl moved to Central California and later Northern California before ultimately moving to Oregon. Eugene has been a great fit for her because “I wanted to live in a place that was not so crowded and I could see beautiful green all around me.” Her favorite job is her current one—retirement—but she worked in a wide variety of positions throughout her career, including running her own cleaning service, managing an after-school study program for Indigenous children, assisting with pre-K education, and serving as a school bus monitor.

These days, Maryl shares her home with senior dog Baby, whom she adopted from a woman who was no longer able to care for her. She says, “Even though she is 11 she is now my Baby.” In her spare time, she enjoys oil painting, dot art, refinishing furniture, and all forms of traveling. In addition to visiting Alaska and most western US states, she’s had adventures in a long list of countries: Mexico, Canada, Italy, France, Croatia, Turkey, Greece, Belgium, Austria, and Switzerland!

Maryl shares that her motivation to volunteer with the animals comes both from feeling appreciated for the time she spends caring for the cats and from seeing the care with which the Greenhill team makes decisions to provide the best possible quality of life for their feline residents. Volunteering has taught her the extent of Greenhill’s impact in the community, and she feels fortunate to have witnessed many cats come in from difficult situations and ultimately survive and thrive. In addition to the challenging but rewarding cases she sees involving adult cats, she also appreciates that “there is nothing cuter than a kitten” and cherishes the time she spends with the adorably sassy kittens that come through the shelter each week. In her words, “I have so many memories and each week I meet another cat that captures my heart.”
