Greenhill Expands a Program to “Feed it Forward”

Partnering with United Way’s Ride United program, Greenhill delivers pet food & supplies to people in need

EUGENE, OREGON – (June 27, 2022In partnership with United Way of Lane County and the Ride United program, Greenhill Humane Society can now deliver free pet food and supplies directly to people and pets in need.

“Pets are often the first to go hungry when a family is facing financial problems, food insecurity, or lack of housing,” said Megan Burroughs, Greenhill’s Community Engagement & Humane Education Manager. “We’ve seen an increase in requests for help from people who love their pets, but are struggling to care for them. This partnership with Ride United enables us to help the most vulnerable – people without transportation options or with finances that are so low that even a trip to our shelter would be cost prohibitive.”

Currently, people who live within a ten mile radius of Greenhill can request pet food delivered to their home through an online form on Greenhill’s website. Items will be delivered within five days of the request, if available. This program is free of charge for people with financial need. It is supported by United Way, DoorDash, and individuals and businesses who have donated food, supplies, and financial resources.

People who do not live within a ten-mile radius of Greenhill Humane Society can visit the animal shelter any day between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. for access to Greenhill’s Community Pet Food Pantry. Greenhill has had an onsite Community Pet Food Pantry for nearly a decade. The program was expanded significantly in 2020 in response to the Holiday Farm Fire and has continued to grow due to the pandemic and additional environmental and financial crises. In an effort to keep families and pets together, the year-round pet food pantry supports the community’s most vulnerable members. Over the past two years, Greenhill has distributed over 50 tons of pet food and has worked with non-profits throughout Lane County to distribute pet food and supplies to where it’s needed most.

People needing pet food or supplies for their pet can visit Greenhill’s website to fill out a request form at www.green-hill.org/pet-food-bank, call the shelter at 541-689-1503 or visit Greenhill any day between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Community support and donations enable Greenhill to offer this program. Those inspired to contribute to this program can drop off any dog and cat food (even if the bag is open), treats, cat litter, or KMR (kitten milk replacer) at the shelter any day between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monetary donations towards the pet pantry can be made by visiting www.green-hill.org or calling 541-689-1503.
